Every year Incline Village and separately Michael Milken would display fireworks on Lake Tahoe near the Hyatt Regency. We could see them from the deck on our house, approximately 2-3 miles away and partially obscured by trees.
The key to shooting fireworks is to determine a shutter speed that shows the largest burst of light, balancing between the center and the edges. In these photos, a shutter speed of 4 seconds (yes, I used a tripod) worked well along with a f/5.6 aperture and ISO 200. The camera was a Nikon D800 with a 80-400mm telephoto lens.
